La última colección de joyería de Birgit Marie Schmidt lleva al espectador por un viaje a la infancia donde la fantasía y el juego eran tan importantes –o más– que la realidad. Para I can't seem to get rid of the horses [Pareciera que no puedo deshacerme de los caballos], Schmidt transformó sus recurrentes fantasías infantiles de caballos salvajes y las tradujo en piezas de joyería que abren la puerta hacia un mundo de figuras ecuestres surreales, extrañas y adorables a la vez. Para crear las piezas de su colección –collares, pendientes, anillos, pulseras y aretes– combinó y talló figuras de cera para después fundirlas en latón y plata antes de patinarlas en oro. Birgit Marie Schmidt estudió arquitectura en la Universidad de Artes Aplicadas en Viena, y se especializó en diseño digital, pero cimienta su conocimiento en las habilidades y experiencia que desde muy niña desarrolló al estar cerca del taller de plata su padre. Estos dos tipos de educación le han ayudado a construir una visión amplia entre la artesanía y el conocimiento digital en la producción de arte y diseño.
Birgit Marie Schmidt's final jewelry collectionand it's accompanying installation take its viewer on a journey back to a young age where fantasy and play were as important as reality – if not even more so. For the development of her collection I can't seem to get rid of the horses she transformed her own recurring childhood fantasies of wild horse adventures into wearable jewelry pieces. Her pieces open a door to a world of strange yet lovable physical manifestations of surreal equestrian creatures. To create her pieces –which come in the form of necklaces, pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings– she combines and carves wax figures to later cast them into brass and silver before gold plating. Birgit Marie Schmidt studied architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, with a focus on digital design before coming to the RCA to study Applied Art. She builds upon the skills and experience she learned being around her father's silver workshop from a young age on. These two opposing education paths have equipped her with a broad view on craft versus digital thinking and making in art and design.
